The Great Wall of China is not alone! There is an another Great Wall in the northern part of Germany near Schleswig and Haitabu (Hedeby) and now during the excavations this summer a gateway in the wall have been found! During the Viking Age about  a great wall was constructed close to Haitabu and it was also built during the Middle Ages. Its total length is about 30 kilometers or 19 mile. The wall runs through the entire state of Schleswig-Holstein!

It bear the name of “Danevirke” which means more or less “the work of the Danes”. It is considered being the largest earthwork in northern Europe.  During this summer archaeologists have examined a three meter thick part of the wall from the 8th century. During the excavations a long sought for part of the wall was discovered and it was the gateway!

The excavation have revealed the great craftsmanship that many of the Vikings had.
