Hello world!

Just wanted to give you all some information what’s going on with the site, why somethings haven’t happened yet and what’s to come!

First why there haven’t been any YouTube videos for a while: Some of them are near completion but lack some polish. I need to shoot the last sequences with a web camera and the one I have ordered have been delayed until the end of September. But I might redo some of the videos a bit so I can post them earlier.

I’m also currently working on an article about experimental archaeology I’ve done with soapstone vessels in combination with digital archaeology as well. This take some time since the article is closing on deadline as well…

I’m also working on an excavation in Sweden outside Landskrona in the southern part of Sweden which have taken most of my awaken time working 40 hours a week. The excavation have ranged from the Early Neolithic to today.

Next week I will be working with some digital archaeology and get some of it published but I will give you more info about that when it is done.

I have also started to look at making a transition to a paid webhotel. This homepage is currently running on the WordPress free service which is really good but is somewhat limiting on what I can do with it. This also hinders me a bit to develop the site the way I want to which is why I’m looking for moving the site to a real web hotel.

I’m also currently negotiating for co-operation with different companies and organisations and in the coming months much will happen :D.

The ARATNE trailer have been on ice for a short while due to lack of time but I will continue working on it in the coming weeks.

I will also start posting more unique posts in different ways about archaeology, technology and a combination of the two there is much to be said and done about these subjects.

As you can see in the menu as well there is still a lot of pages to be established and filled with content. The aim is also to get some content like 3d-models, reviews and more as well in the not to far future. I’m also applying for a job and if I get that it might take some extra time before everything is launched at the blog. But otherwise I will be studying at the university and have some more time to put into the blog and homepage.

But be sure much is going on and I’m hard at work getting a good foundation to this homepage and to the ARATNE network!

Please leave comments and feedback! What would you like to see here, on Youtube, Facebook and Twitter?

Here is a movie from the ongoing Titanic expedition. A good thing that the expedition already have reveled is that the decay of Titanic is not as bad as expected.

The loss of Titanic was a loss of more than 1500 people passengers and crew. Today the ship and many people rests at the depth of four kilometers below the surface.

Hopefully this expedition will help preserving the Titanic for future generations through digital technology,3d-reconstructions but as well to help to tell the tragic story about what happened almost 100 years ago…

For more information about this expedition read here

Here is the opening cinematic for Fable 3! It is both comedic and tragic, but have you experienced kicking chickens or playing Fable you’ll like this!

Hello world!

After a long break I’m finally back again with a lot of things going on.

The spring was very busy, I finished a bachelor essay, got a job as an archaeologist as well as I got married! So it has been hectic but a fantastic spring and start of the summer. I’ve also been planing what I should do with the blog and how it should develop.

So now I’ve started rolling out Archaeology and Tech 2.0. I changed the layout around a bit, added more pages and so on.

The main focus will now to keep the blog live and growing but also to advance a bit to Youtube territory by start making videos. That’s also why I sometime will talk about ARATNE Archaeology and Tech Network.

My idea is to create a platform for technology and archaeology as well as a combination between those two subjects. So this blog will now be more of a homepage with a blog inside.

There will also be a Facebook group Archaeology and Tech. I’m also on Twitter as archaeologytech so add me there as well! The blog will continue giving news about archaeology and tech. For the tech stuff with computers both PC and Mac will be covered!

I will also start to make videos for Youtube about archaeological and tech news and interesting thoughts that comes to mind. I will also make tutorial and guides both on this homepage as well as videos on Youtube about models, photogrammetry, Blender and much more.

Reviewing both gear as well as books and articles will also be posted on the homepage as well as some of it on Youtube.

In the future I will also have a forum with the possibility to discuss archaeology and technology and discuss with people the possibilities of combining science with everyday technology. The forum will probably be on another homepage in the beginning but everything will be in the same place if this turns out well.

Under the links I will build a very large library of good homepages as well as Youtube videos which I hope can be of good use to you all.

So a lot will happen and it will take time so bear with me. I’m working 40 hours a week so all the fun work with ARATNE will happen sooner or later but I’ll take small steps at a time but will try hard to be quite regular on updates anyway in some form and it is major work to get everything togheter before I get a routine to create it as well.

But I hope you all look forward to it as much as I do, we are looking forward towards a bright future!

A lot of texts will be updated as well on the homepage during the coming week so stay tuned for more information. I’ll also post more information about it and present some ideas I hope some of you will be interested in participating in!

Apple have tonight announced the new iPad!

Some features from Apple regarding the new iPad is that you can surf the Internet and watch each homepage on the screen, and you use your finger to navigate. Surfing the web will be more like reading a book than looking at a computer screen.

You can also check your e-mail and have split screen view showing both your open e-mail and the messages you got in the inbox. As with the iPhone you can turn the iPad and the page adapts and fills the screen. Photos show up directly in the mail and you could save it right away.

iPad will work with e-mail providers as AOL, Yahoo! mail, Gmail, Hotmail and MobileMe.

iPad can handle your photos quite nicely watch slide show, zoom in and out and similar stuff like that, doesn’t really seem to be out of the ordinary really wih that feature.

You can also watch movies with the iPad both HD, TV shows, music videos and podcasts. Since the buttons are built on the screen the movie completly fills the screen.

Talking about movies iPad also supports YouTube and seem to get a quite nice feature to shift through the movies. And of course it supports YouTube HD movies.

With the iPad there comes an iPod app so you can listen to your music and browse by albums, song, artist and just use your finger and flick through the different music. When you play a song the album art show up in full-screen and you can listen to your music through the built-in speakers or with wired or Bluetooth wireless headphones.

You can also go to iTunes Store and browse and buy music, podcasts, rent movies and alot more and you can also sync the iPad with your Mac or PC.

And talking about apps and Stores the iPad will run about 140 000 apps from the App store and there is also new apps already and more on the way that is designed for the iPad.

There is also the iBooks app where you can read and buy books. There will be books from more or less all genres and when you buy a book it will show on your bookshelf. The high-resolution and LED-backlit screen makes it easy to read even in low light.

There is also more features as a calendar, you will be able to look at maps satellite as well as in street view seems a bit like google maps, you can write notes and of course search for apps and files on your iPad.

This was some info and I’ll post more when I find more interesting and cool stuff!

I have watched the keynotes from Microsoft and Intel on CES.

First on to Microsoft, they had of course a lot of things going on. Much of the keynote was as usual a lot of talking about how good everything was and that especially the xbox 360 was really great.

Windows 7 had some attention and it seems to be quite a popular OS and will probably continue to grow during the whole of 2010. I haven’t yet tested Windows 7 but I’m thinking about maybe having both Vista and Windows 7 before deciding to convert. Windows 7 have multi touch support which also showed as Microsoft will launch together with other companies as what they call Slatepc’s. They are meant to be for e-reading, surfing and entertainment on the go.

Microsoft also expressed that they will continue to develop Bing Microsoft’s search engine with more functions as for example Bing maps which let you go to 3D in street view. But some critique to this is a lot of areas in the world it doesn’t give a 3d-view since there are not enough satellite information. Focus is as always USA for Microsoft but it will continue to expand across the world more and more as seen with the Xbox 360.

Talking about Xbox 360 Microsoft will launch the new “controller” which they call Project Natal this holiday in 2010. It is not really a controller in the ordinary way. It is more of a camera that let’s you control the movements on the screen with your own body. I think this is quite exciting since it is a different way to control your game. But since Nintendo launched Wii I don’t think it’s such a big improvement yet. It is like playing a Wii but with a bit more moving your body and without controls in your hands. But I hope they improve it and make it more interactive as seen in previous demos of Natal, but the future will show…

Intel’s keynote was a lot about computer processors of course launching their new 32 nanometers with 1 billion transistors! Intel really seems to be hard at working on improving processors. If they succeed they will be a big name in tech industry with new 3d-televions coming and as well as more advanced computer rendering which takes a lot of processing power. The fourth coming Shrek movie requires 9x the amount of calculations for computers as the first one did.

This was a bit about CES so far and stay tuned for more tomorrow.

You can also check in the official homepage of CES here

This blog is alive! I have been super busy with things irl but I’m working on a schedule and there will be time for the blog. Maybe not every single day but at least a few times a week. I’m really sorry for the long time not updating but at least now I’m back and the blog will get attention it deserves. And I would like to say a big thank you to all of you who have continued to visit the blog . But now over to something different.

Is the end of the World coming 2012?

The short answer is NO! By now some of you might have seen the movie 2012. The Maya calendar is said to show that the World/Earth would be destroyed in either 21 or 23 of December 2012. Is this true?

No it isn’t. As an archaeologist and scientist I want to see real information and facts from people who have researched the subject. And no, I don’t look at some superstitious peoples research, it should be made in a scientific way. So let’s look at it from a scientific point of view. First let us look at the dates. Both the 21st and 23d of December is occurring. Ok, but if the Maya indians would have predicted the end of the world shouldn’t they have come up with only one date not two? If they would have said two dates how sure could they really be that it will happen in the first place?

So let us look at the Maya calendar itself. I will skip all the technical and mathematic stuff of which consists of to make it readable today. You can check my links to read more.

To my help I look at research from the FAMSI which is Foundation for the advancement of Mesoamerican studies. It shows there is nothing in Maya, Aztec or in any Mesoamerican ancient prophecy that talk about the world coming to an end in 2012. The notion of a “Great Cycle” which some people refer to today is a completely modern invention.

The only thing that will happen in 2012 is that the known Maya calendar stops, it ends nothing more. Just for a calendar ends the world doesn’t end. I mean most of you probably have a calendar. Think if it would be mass hysteria every year just because your calendar stops and you have to get a new one, quite ridiculous  They didn’t think the world will end in any way. The Maya actually takes about our distant FUTURE instead. In the famous town Palenque there are inscriptions that say in 4772 AD people will be celebrating the coronation of the great king Pakal!

Of course the Earth will end sometime when the Sun will grow to a red giant and then collapse and burn out but that won’t happen for several billion years. But what would happen if we found some Maya inscription that would say that the world would end in 2012 would it happen.

Would it happen then? No not likely. Humans have during all time periods predicted the end of the world. Closest example for us was the year 2000 AD. A new millienium, people thought Jesus would come back, the was the end of the world, all the computers would crash and the internet would go down.

But not much happened and the world went on. It would be the same even if we would find an inscription.

Ok so the Maya calendar doesn’t say the end will world. What about things from outer space, meteorites and other things that could destroy the world.

For an answer I took some help from NASA. People often talk about a planet named Nibiru which would collide with the earth or that a solar flare will toast the planet and other things some seen in 2012. But it won’t happen, there are no planets or anything on collision course with the Earth that could destroy it in 2012.

“I don’t have anything against the movie. It’s the way it’s been marketed and the way it exploits people’s fears,” NASA scientist David Morrison at the Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., told Discovery News.Scientific misinformation about 2012 has been ramping up for a few years, with more than 200 books and 1,000 Web sites purporting to explain various doomsday scenarios. Sony Pictures is behind a particularly viral campaign to build publicity for its apocalyptic movie “2012,” The company has set up an interlinked family of Web sites and Facebook pages to infuse a sense of reality to its fictional work. The lead character in the film, played by actor John Cusack, for example, is the faux author of a faux book about a murder, conspiracy and disaster aboard the space shuttle Atlantis, which, coincidentally, is poised for launch on a space station construction mission the weekend the movie debuted. The fictional fiction, named “Farewell, Atlantis,” has a Web site, a Facebook page to follow “author appearances,” fans and friends, a faux publisher with a faux Web site, a faux press release and endorsements from the very real son of the late Carl Sagan. There’s also a fake institute that presumably dispenses “real” science supporting the movie’s claims, as well as a fake news website that distributes fake press releases about a fake aerospace company winning government contracts.

Warren Betts, owner of a California-based publicity firm that peddles real science stories tied to movies, says the type of marketing campaign Sony is executing for “2012” is nothing new.

“It’s been done before,” said Betts, citing the 1999 horror movie “The Blair Witch Project,” a story about a group of amateur documentary film-makers who have a really bad couple of days in the woods.

“Some people went to that movie and they thought it was reality, that it was an actual documentary,” Betts said.

Morrison says Sony has crossed a line with promoting “2012.”

“I think people are really, really worried about the world coming to an end Kids are contemplating suicide. Adults tell me they can’t sleep and can’t stop crying. There are people who are really, really scared,” he said.

“People are very gullible,” he added. “It a sad testimonial that you need NASA to tell you the world’s not going to end.”

So to summarise, no the world will not end in 2012 because of a Maya calendar says so (which it doesn’t) or anything of significant size form space would hit the earth which it won’t according to NASA.

Have you seen the movie 2012 if so what did you think? Did you belivie that a Maya calender was dooming the earth or did you know the real information behind it? Let me know, post in the comments section :D.

To read more look here about the Maya Calender and here for what NASA says.

On Monday it will be more updates on the blog and some news!
