Hello! Apple will very soon have an event and I’ll report live from it!

The co-founder of Microsoft Paul Allen have started suing different companies for Interval Licensing LLC.This  lists violations of four patents for technology that appear to be important parts  of the companies—and that of e-commerce and Internet search companies in general. The suit seeks damages but doesn’t specify an amount.

The companies that have been sued is not small ones… It is Google, eBay, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo Inc, AOL Inc, Netflix, Office Dept, Office Max, Staples Inc and Youtube!

He hasn’t sued Microsoft or Amazon in which he owns or have interest in the companies. EBay will have an enormous defense as well as Facebook says that they will fight hard.

It is possible that the companies have used some technology belonging to Paul Allen but it will probably not fall in his patent. The companies lawyers should have made sure that they don’t violate anything so it will probably be pointless. But it will be interesting to follow and see what happens. Microsoft itself really started buying software developed by others and developed it a bit so no original ip from Microsoft there….

In the end I think the loser will be Paul Allen and the winners be the lawyers around the world getting some job to do…

Here is some new interesting information about the robot doing research in the Kofu pyramid in Egypt has previously have been reported here.

It is built by some researchers at Leeds University together with a French aviation company Dessault. Involved is also the British robotics company Scoutek.

The robot will have a small fiber optic camera to make it possible looking around corners in the narrow shaft. It will also have an ultrasonic probe for testing the quality of the rock. One cool thing is also the little minirobot

that can be released from the main robot which is under an inch big. The robot will also use carbon fiber wheels and special nylon to not hurt the pyramid. It is also quite easy to switch parts on the robot which will be needed since the scientists never no what will happen. The team will also use 3d-software and print out the parts at Leeds University.

This will be a great study minimising the damage done to the pyramid but giving new information about the pyramid and maybe for the future collect material to enter the pyramid for an examination by archaeologists. This is really a good way of combining archaeology and technology as well as different science teams and companies sharing expertise and knowledge to get new information about the pyramid and about the history of Egypt.

I will continue reporting on this project when I have more information. In the mean time you can read more about it here

Hello world!

Here is an update on what you can expect on this homepage, Youtube, Twitter and Facebook in the future and what I’m working on at the moment.

Since I’m often very busy irl and during periods don’t post so much info here, I’m looking into how I can post short news from the world of archaeology and technology to release new content on a regular basis. When I have more time I will as usual post my own thoughts and ideas with the news as well.

I’m currently working on a Youtube video review of the König tripod, there is still some work to be done but it will launch this weekend! I’ll also try to get some other reviews done with some tech equipment.

I’m also working on doing a storyboard for the real trailer for Archaeology and Tech Network. I have quite some big plans for that trailer so it will take quite a lot of time to get it done probably several months as it seems like now.

In my idea of combining archaeology and technology I have started looking into archaeological software on the Internet to start with. There is quite a lot of dead links and old out-dated programs but there is also some really really good ones but that can be very hard to find. So I’ll have posts and videos about good and bad archaeological software as well.

I’m also still looking for Co.partnes so if you have a blog about archaeology, technology or both or related subjects maybe a company related to the subjects, leave a comment below so we can get in touch and maybe exchange information as well as have co-operation in different ways!

If you have any suggestions on what you would like to see here leave a comment with your feedback!

The world’s most ambitious and advanced survey of the world-famous ship Titanic have begun! It is scientists from the Institute of Nautical Archaeology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute that have started a survey of the ship in a new way. They will use computer imaging, high-definition video and with this material they are planning to create the site of the Titanic in 3D and make it available to the public on the Internet when the model is ready.

The pressure on the depth where Titanic have sunk is 400 times greater than on the surface of the Earth. Most previous expeditions have focused on getting artifacts from the ship as well as taking photographs on the ship’s stern and bow. Now with using the latest techniques the vast area that is Titanic today will be treated as an archaeological excavation which will bring enormous known and new information to the scientists and the public.

The expedition will also catalogue the enormous amount of artifacts that is scattered across the ocean floor and build a digital archive of objects from the ship.  Using the latest in sonar technology as well as probably using computer vision techniques like photogrammetry and motion from structure the scientists will try to record the whole site in a completely new way. This will not only be interesting for the public but also make the wreckage accessible for researchers around the world who now get the possibility to visit the whole site and in this way gain new valuable information.

Almost the best part is that in recording Titanic this way it will be with a non-destructive archaeology which makes the ship will still be there intact on the ocean floor for future generations.

This is a great and very important way to use different technology together with archaeology. Photogrammetry and motion from structure have been used for a few years but haven’t been tried at this depth. The outcome will be very interesting to see. It is great that the site also will remain intact but that archaeologists get a chance to get documentation anyway to gain new knowledge about what happened.

The app for realtime communication and working together have now been shutdown by Google. The idea behind it seemed very good but it required an invitation in the beginning which greatly limited the number of users.

I don’t think that Google Wave was very known to the broad public either which made in the end that the application had quite few users. Google should have brought it to every company in the world because could they have launched it at the companies on a broad front it should have been much more successful. The public knew too little about Google Wave as well as if you more or less didn’t know any people irl using wave it was often quite pointless to try it out.

But Google have announced that they will bring the ideas and probably some of the software behind Wave to some of their other apps. And as Wave could have been a social platform you could think that Google now has a little chance of getting into the social platforming on the Internet. But as a matter of fact it is the opposite.

There are rumors about Google developing something called Google Games as well as Google Me. With this  it is quite likely that Google are aiming for platforms like Facebook. Google have bought a part of Zynga games the company behind Farmville and other famous and well-known casual games at Facebook and believe me there is money to be made in that industry. The question is though if Google can handle going in to the social networking aspects on the Internet?

It is a shame that Google wave stops as it had been very useful for archaeologists in the field during excavations communicating with  people back at the office or other specialists you need to be connected with. But I hope and believe that Google can bring some new good software to the people, archaeologist and tech-people around world.

In the future I’ll write more about this Google entering social media as well as casual gaming and also look into software that is useful for archaeologists and technicians so stay tuned for more interesting posts.
